Energy: Forms and Conversion of Energy

TOPIC: Energy III
SUBTOPIC: Forms and Conversion of Energy
DAY: ____________________
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Mention the different forms of energy.
  2. Explain in simple terms how one form of energy can be changed to another.
  3. Give examples of energy conversion in daily life.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS:

Energy, Change, Form, Convert, Light, Heat, Sound, Electrical

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Toy fan, torchlight, battery, light bulb
  • Chart of different forms of energy (pictures)
  • Flashcards of energy types (light, heat, sound)

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY:

Teacher uses a torchlight to show how battery energy changes to light. Ask: “How did the torchlight start working? What made the light come on?”

MEANING OF FORMS OF ENERGY:

Energy can appear in different forms. The common forms are:

  1. Light energy – seen from the sun, bulbs, fire
  2. Heat energy – from fire, sun, stove
  3. Sound energy – from music, clapping, bell
  4. Electrical energy – from electricity, battery
  5. Mechanical energy – from movement, like riding a bicycle

ENERGY CONVERSION (Changing from one form to another)

Energy can change from one form to another.

  • In a torchlight, chemical energy in the battery changes to light energy.
  • In a car, fuel (chemical energy) changes to movement energy.
  • In a fan, electricity (electrical energy) changes to mechanical energy (movement).
