TOPIC: Measurement of Time
SUBTOPIC: Meaning & Instruments, Units (s, min, h, days, months, years), Activities within Time
CLASS: Basic 3
AGE: 8–9 years
DATE: __________
PERIOD: __________
DURATION: 40 minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES (as per scheme)
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Mention past methods of obtaining time (sun/shadows, cock-crow, sand clock, water clock).
- Explain the meaning of time.
- Mention instruments for measuring time (clock, wristwatch, stopwatch, calendar).
- Identify units of time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years).
- Discuss how tasks are performed within specified time frames.
KEY VOCABULARY
Time, second (s), minute (min), hour (h), day, week, month, year, stopwatch, calendar, schedule.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Wall clock, wristwatch, simple stopwatch/timer (phone in demo mode if allowed), monthly calendar chart, task-time cards (e.g., “brush teeth – 2 min”).
CONTENT OF THE LESSON
Meaning of Time:
Time tells when events happen and how long they take.
Past (Non-standard) Methods:
Watching the sun’s shadow (sundial idea), sand or water clocks, listening for cock-crow at dawn.
Modern Instruments:
Clocks and wristwatches (analogue/digital), stopwatch/timer for short activities, calendar for days/months.
Units & Simple Conversions:
60 s = 1 min; 60 min = 1 h; 24 h = 1 day; 7 days = 1 week; about 30 days = 1 month; 12 months = 1 year.
Planning Tasks in Time:
Estimate and plan how long school tasks take (assembly, lesson, break, homework). Use a simple schedule.
DIAGRAMS/ILLUSTRATIONS
- Analogue clock face labeled with numbers and hands.
- Calendar page with weeks marked.
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
Show two tasks: “run 50 steps” vs. “write your name 10 times”. Ask which is faster/longer, then time one task with a stopwatch.
CLASS EXERCISE 1
Tell the time shown on two drawn clock faces. Write in h: min and in words.
CLASS EXERCISE 2
Match each activity to a likely time:
(a) Brushing teeth
(b) School day
(c) Classroom prayer
Options: 2 minutes, 6 hours, 1 minute.
CLASS EXERCISE 3 (Planning)
Create a mini daily schedule (morning to bedtime) with estimated times for 5 activities.
ASSIGNMENT (MCQs)
