  2. Give examples of change in nature.
  3. Differentiate between temporary and permanent changes.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: change, temporary, permanent, rust, melting, burning.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Pictures of ice melting, paper burning, rusted iron, and plant growth
  • Real objects (ice cubes, iron nail, paper)
  • Chart showing classification of changes

CONTENT OF THE LESSON:

Meaning of Change:
Change is when something becomes different from how it was before. In nature, changes happen all the time.

  2. Permanent Change: Cannot be reversed.
    • Example: Burning paper turns into ash.
    • Rusting of iron.

Table: Differences between Temporary and Permanent Changes

Temporary Change

Permanent Change

Can be reversed

Cannot be reversed

No new substance formed

New substance formed

Example: melting ice

Example: burning wood

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY:
Teacher shows pupils an ice cube, lets it melt, and asks:

  • Can we make it solid again?

  2. Burning paper is an example of (a) temporary change (b) permanent change (c) reversible change
  3. Ice melting into water is (a) permanent change (b) temporary change (c) no change
  4. Rusting of iron is a (a) permanent change (b) temporary change (c) reversible change
  5. Stretching a rubber band is (a) permanent change (b) temporary change (c) irreversible change
