Growing Crops

TOPIC: Growing Crops
SUBTOPIC: Conditions for Crop Growth and Use of Fertilizers
CLASS: Primary 6
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. State the basic conditions necessary for healthy crop growth.
  2. Explain the importance of fertilizers to the soil and crops.
  3. List the main components of fertilizers.
  4. Demonstrate how to grow crops using compost or fertilizer.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS

  • Fertilizer
  • Compost
  • Nutrients
  • Manure
  • Soil fertility
  • Crop yield

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Samples of fertilizer (NPK), compost manure
  • Real seeds (maize, beans, etc.)
  • A bowl or small farm plot
  • Chart showing nutrient cycle in soil

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

Teacher asks:
👉 “Have you seen a farmer planting maize or yam?”
👉 “What do crops need to grow well?”

Pupils brainstorm answers like water, soil, sunlight, fertilizer. Teacher then introduces the lesson.

CONTENT OF LESSON

Conditions Needed for Crops to Grow Properly

For crops to grow well, they need:

  1. Good soil – rich in nutrients.
  2. Water – for germination and growth.
  3. Air – plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
  4. Sunlight – needed to make food.
  5. Fertilizer/Manure – adds nutrients to the soil.
  6. Space – enough room to spread roots and leaves.

Importance of Fertilizers

Fertilizers are substances added to the soil to improve fertility. They:

  1. Increase soil nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium).
  2. Make crops grow faster and healthier.
  3. Increase harvest (higher yield).
  4. Replace nutrients lost after farming.

Components of Fertilizer (NPK)

Most fertilizers are made up of:

  1. N – Nitrogen → helps leaves grow.
  2. P – Phosphorus → helps roots and fruits.
  3. K – Potassium → makes plants strong and resist disease.

Growing Crops with Compost or Fertilizer

Compost manure is made from decayed leaves, food waste, and animal dung.

How to grow crops with composite manure:

    1. Prepare the soil (clear and loosen).
    2. Add compost or fertilizer.
    3. Plant the seeds.
    4. Water and weed regularly.

CLASS EXERCISE 1

  1. List four conditions crops need to grow well.
  2. State two reasons why fertilizers are important to farmers.
  3. Mention the three main components of fertilizer and their functions.

CLASS EXERCISE 2

Fill in the blanks:

  1. Plants need _______ from the sun to make food.
  2. Fertilizers supply _______ to the soil.
  3. Nitrogen helps in the growth of _______.
  4. The type of manure made from waste materials is called _______.
  5. A plant without potassium will easily get _______.

CLASS EXERCISE 3

Draw a maize plant and label the root, stem, and leaves.

ASSIGNMENT (MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS)

  1. Which of these is NOT needed for crop growth? (a) Soil (b) Air (c) Plastic (d) Water
  2. The letter P in fertilizer stands for (a) Potassium (b) Phosphorus (c) Protein (d) Phosphate
  3. Fertilizers increase (a) Soil fertility (b) Soil dryness (c) Soil sand (d) Soil erosion
  4. Compost manure is made from (a) Water only (b) Decayed organic matter (c) Stones (d) Air
  5. Which nutrient makes leaves green and healthy? (a) Nitrogen (b) Potassium (c) Phosphorus (d) Calcium
