Meaning of Drug Abuse
Drug abuse means using drugs in the wrong way, such as:
- Taking too much of a drug
- Taking drugs without a doctor’s advice
- Using illegal or harmful substances
Drug abuse is dangerous and can harm your body and mind.
Commonly Abused Drugs in Nigeria
Some drugs that people often abuse in Nigeria include:
- Cigarettes
- Alcohol
- Marijuana (also called Indian hemp)
- Tramadol
- Cocaine
- Codeine cough syrup
Effects of Drug Abuse
- Effect On the Individual (the person):
- Addiction – they can’t stop taking it
- Brain damage – they can’t think well
- Poor health – it damages the liver or kidneys
- It can lead to madness.
- It can lead to accidents or even death
- Effects On Society (everyone around):
- It leads more crime and violence
- It leads poor performance in school
- It leads to loss of future leaders
- It causes waste of money and resources
How to Prevent Drug Abuse
- Say NO to friends who pressure you to try drugs
- Only take drugs given by a doctor or nurse
- Learn and teach others about the dangers of drug abuse
- Support laws that stop the sale and use of illegal drugs
Remember:
Taking drugs the wrong way can destroy lives.
Say NO to drug abuse, and say YES to a healthy future!
