Meaning of Puberty

Puberty is the time in a child’s life when the body begins to change and grow into an adult body.

  • It usually starts between ages 9 and 15.
  • These changes help prepare the body for adulthood and reproduction.

Physical Changes During Puberty

During puberty, the body changes in different ways for boys and girls.

Boys may notice:

  1. A deeper voice
  2. Beard and moustache starting to grow
  3. Broader chest
  4. Wet dreams (releasing sperm during sleep)

Girls may notice:

  1. Breast development
  2. Hips become wider
  3. Start of menstruation (monthly period)
  4. Hair growth under arms and in private parts

Emotional Changes During Puberty

As the body changes, feelings and emotions also begin to change.

  1. Mood swings (feeling happy, then sad suddenly)
  2. Attraction to the opposite sex
  3. Desire to be independent or make their own choices
  4. Feeling shy, confused, or unsure about the changes

Importance of Puberty

Puberty is a normal and important part of growing up. It:

  1. Prepares the body for having children in the future
  2. Helps you become more mature in thoughts and actions
  3. Marks the change from childhood to adulthood
