Lesson 1 — Meaning of Danger

Danger is the possibility that something harmful will happen. Harm can be caused by people, animals, things, and other factors.

Lesson 2 — Sources of Danger

Sources of danger are places, persons, or things that cause harm. Common sources of danger include:

  1. Slippery or wet floor
  2. Broken bottles
  3. Unwanted (sharp or hazardous) materials
  4. Uncovered wells
  5. Strangers
  6. Swampy areas
  7. Busy roads
  8. Playing with sharp objects
  9. Fire
  10. Defective electronics or machines

Lesson 3 — Meaning of Security and Insecurity

Term Meaning
Security The state of being free from all dangers or harms at home, in school, or anywhere you are.
Insecurity When you are not feeling safe or free from danger. Signs include anxiety, fear, panic, doubt, trouble, and worry.

Lesson 4 — Dangers of Insecurity

The dangers of insecurity in communities include:

  1. It makes people restless.
  2. It causes people to lose their lives and properties.
  3. It decreases growth and development.
  4. It discourages both local and foreign investors.
  5. It makes people abandon their indigenous homes.
  6. It makes people become refugees in foreign countries.
  7. It makes the whole area uninhabitable.

Lesson 5 — Difference Between Danger and Insecurity

Danger Insecurity
A specific threat or harmful event A general feeling of not being safe
Can be a single incident (e.g. fire, accident) Is a continuous state of fear or unease
Example: a broken bottle on the floor Example: fear of robbery in the community

Precautions Against Dangers and Insecurity

  1. Do not talk to strangers.
  2. Do not get into a stranger’s car.
  3. Do not pick up calls from unknown numbers.
  4. Do not open the door if you are alone at home.
  5. Do not play with chemicals or sharp objects.
  6. Do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
  7. Call for help immediately if there is a fire.
  8. Do not play on the road or ride a bicycle on the highway.
  9. Eat only good and well-cooked food.
  10. Do not take drugs unless directed by a doctor.
