Lesson 1 — Meaning of Water

Water is the most common liquid. It is the liquid that descends from the clouds as rain and forms streams, lakes, and seas. Water has no odour, colour, or taste in its pure form. Most of the bodies of human beings, plants, and animals are filled with water. All living things would die if there were no water.

Lesson 2 — Sources of Water

Source Description
1. Rain Water that comes directly from the sky.
2. Stream A natural water surrounded by land.
3. Well A deep hole dug in the ground until water is reached.
4. Tap Water (Pipe-borne) Clean water that flows through pipes before reaching the tap.
5. Borehole A very deep narrow well completed with an electric pump that draws water to a tap.
6. Spring A place where water flows out of the ground or a rock. Usually clean and pure.
7. River A natural, God-made water that flows in a long line on the land to the sea or ocean.

Lesson 3 — Qualities of Good Water

  1. Good water must be tasteless — no sweet or bitter taste.
  2. Good water must have no colour.
  3. Good water must have no odour.
  4. Good water must be clean.
  5. Good water must be free from germs.
  6. Good water must not contain any harmful chemicals.

Lesson 4 — Uses of Water at Home

  1. Washing — washing clothes, plates, and cars.
  2. Drinking — we drink water to live and satisfy our thirst.
  3. Bathing — we use water for bathing and brushing teeth.
  4. Cooking — water is used in cooking food.
  5. Watering flowers and plants — water is used to wet flowers in the garden.
  6. Cleaning the house — water is used to clean floors and surfaces.
  7. Flushing the toilet — water is used to flush and keep the toilet clean.

Lesson 5 — How to Make Water Clean

  1. Use a water filter.
  2. Boil the water before drinking.
  3. Add purifying chemicals like alum or chlorine.
