Teacher asks: “When you wake up in the morning, what do you do first? Do you open your eyes?” (Yes). Teacher: “A computer also ‘wakes up’ when we switch it on. That is called BOOTING.”

Lesson 1 — Meaning of Booting

Booting is the process of starting up a computer when you switch it on. It is like the computer “waking up” and getting ready to work.

Simple definition: Booting means turning on the computer so it can start working.

What Happens During Booting?

  1. The computer turns on.
  2. The screen lights up.
  3. The computer loads its operating system (e.g. Windows).
  4. The computer is ready for you to use.

Lesson 2 — Ways of Booting

There are two ways to boot a computer:

Way of Booting Meaning When to Use How to Do It
Cold Boot Starting the computer from a completely OFF state First thing in the morning, after shutdown Press the power button to turn on
Warm Boot Restarting the computer while it is already ON When computer is slow or frozen Click “Restart” from the Start menu

Simple Analogy for Children

  • Cold boot = You wake up in the morning from sleep.
  • Warm boot = You take a short nap and wake up again.

Why Do We Need Booting?

  1. To prepare the computer for work.
  2. To fix small problems (warm boot helps).
  3. To start the computer after shutdown.
