Existence of Air and Creation of Air — Demonstrating the Presence and Movement of Air – Primary 1 Basic Science Lesson Note

TOPIC: Existence of Air and Creation of Air

SUBTOPIC: Demonstrating the Existence of Air and Creating Air Current

CLASS: Primary 1

DATE: ___________________________

PERIOD: _________________________

DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Show that air exists.
  2. Create air current by blowing or fanning.
  3. State the importance of air to living things.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS

Air, Blow, Fan, Wind, Breathe, Balloon, Existence, Living things.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Balloons
  • Hand fans or cardboard fans
  • Polythene bags
  • Cups and water
  • Pictures/charts showing trees moving in the wind
  • Real objects (handkerchiefs, paper strips)

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

  1. The teacher displays a balloon and asks: “What happens when I blow air into this balloon?”
  2. Pupils respond: “It becomes big!”
  3. The teacher explains that what fills the balloon is air, even though we cannot see it.
  4. Pupils are guided to wave their hands or fan themselves and feel air movement on their skin.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

Meaning and Existence of Air

Air is a mixture of gases around us.

We cannot see air, but we can feel it when it moves.

Air is everywhere — in our homes, classrooms, and outside.

All living things need air to stay alive.

 Demonstration:

  • Blow air into a balloon. It becomes big because air enters it.
  • Put your hand in front of your mouth and blow. You will feel something — that is air.
  • Use a polythene bag and wave it — the bag will move because of air.

Creation of Air Current

When air moves from one place to another, we call it air current or wind.

 Activities:

  • Pupils fan themselves using paper or cardboard.
  • Observe that the moving air cools their body — this shows air current.
  • Ask: “What happens when trees shake?”
Pupils should say: “The wind (air) is blowing!”
