TOPIC: Waste and Waste Disposal (Cont’d)
SUBTOPIC: Methods of Waste Disposal, Recycling, Advantages of Recycling
CLASS: Primary 5
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. State the methods of waste disposal.
  2. Define recycling.
  3. Mention the advantages of recycling.
  4. Share personal ideas for recycling.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: Disposal, Recycling, Incineration, Compost, Reduce, Reuse.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Charts showing refuse disposal methods, items made from recycled materials (plastic, bottles, cans).

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY:
Teacher asks: “What do you do with an empty bottle? Do you throw it away or can you use it for something else?”

CONTENT OF THE LESSON:

Methods of Waste Disposal

Waste must be properly taken care of so it does not harm our environment. Here are some common ways we dispose of waste safely:

  1. Burning (Incineration):

This means setting fire to waste to turn it into ash.

It helps reduce the amount of waste but must be done carefully to avoid smoke pollution.

  1. Dumping in Designated Sites:

Waste is thrown away in special places called dumpsites or landfill sites.

These places are chosen to keep waste away from homes and water sources.

  1. Composting Organic Waste:

This is when we turn food scraps and plant waste into soil fertilizer by letting it rot naturally.

Compost helps plants grow better.

  1. Burying Waste in Landfills:

Waste is buried deep in the ground in a controlled way, so it doesn’t harm the environment.

  1. Recycling:

Waste materials are changed into new useful products instead of being thrown away.

Meaning of Recycling

Recycling means taking old waste materials and making them into something new and useful.

For example:

  • Melting plastic bottles to make new containers like buckets or cups.
  • Recycling paper to make new notebooks or books.
  • Recycling metal cans to create cooking utensils or tools.

Advantages of Recycling

Recycling is very important because it helps us in many ways:

  1. Reduces Waste in the Environment:

Less garbage means a cleaner and healthier environment.

  1. Saves Resources:

Recycling uses fewer raw materials from nature, like trees and metals.

  1. Creates Job Opportunities:

People work in recycling centers, helping to collect, sort, and make new products.

  1. Keeps the Environment Clean:

Recycling stops waste from piling up in streets and rivers.

  1. Saves Money:

Making things from recycled materials is often cheaper than using new ones.

Let’s Remember:

  • Waste can be disposed of by burning, dumping, composting, burying, or recycling.
  • Recycling means turning old waste into new useful things.
  • Recycling helps reduce waste, save resources, create jobs, keep our environment clean, and save money.
