Human Circulatory System (II)

TOPIC: Human Circulatory System (Continued)
SUBTOPIC: Blood Vessels and Circulation of Blood
CLASS: Primary 6
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the main blood vessels in the human body.
  2. Differentiate between arteries, veins, and capillaries.
  3. Describe how blood circulates in the body.
  4. Draw and label a diagram of blood vessels.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS

  • Artery
  • Vein
  • Capillary
  • Circulation
  • Oxygenated blood
  • Deoxygenated blood

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Chart of blood circulation
  • Drawing of arteries, veins, and capillaries
  • Real-life demonstration (feeling pulse at the wrist)

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

Teacher asks pupils to place two fingers on their wrist or neck to feel the pulse. Teacher explains: “That is blood moving through your arteries.”

CONTENT OF LESSON

Blood Vessels

Blood vessels are tiny tubes in our body that carry blood to every part — from your head to your toes!

There are three main types of blood vessels:

  1. Arteries
    • Carry blood away from the heart
    • This blood is rich in oxygen
    • Example: The artery that carries blood to your brain
  2. Veins
    • Bring blood back to the heart
    • This blood has less oxygen because it has been used by the body
    • Example: Veins in your arms and legs
  3. Capillaries
    • Very tiny blood vessels
    • They connect arteries to veins
    • They help in the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients with body cells

Circulation of Blood

The movement of blood around the body is called blood circulation. It’s like a loop that never stops!

Here’s how it works:

  1. The lungs give oxygen to the blood.
  2. The heart pumps this oxygen-rich blood through arteries to the body.
  3. Capillaries deliver oxygen and nutrients to body cells and collect waste (like carbon dioxide).
  4. The veins carry the used (deoxygenated) blood back to the heart.
  5. The heart sends the blood to the lungs to get fresh oxygen again.

And then the cycle continues!

CLASS EXERCISE 1

  1. Name the three types of blood vessels.
  2. State one difference between arteries and veins.
  3. What is the function of capillaries?

CLASS EXERCISE 2

Fill in the blanks:

  1. Blood vessels are ______ that carry blood.
  2. Arteries carry blood ______ the heart.
  3. Veins carry blood ______ the heart.
  4. Capillaries connect ______ and ______.
  5. The movement of blood in the body is called ______.

CLASS EXERCISE 3

Draw a simple diagram showing how blood flows from the heart → arteries → capillaries → veins → heart.

ASSIGNMENT (MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS)

  1. Which vessel carries blood away from the heart? (a) Artery (b) Vein (c) Capillary (d) Nerve
  2. Blood rich in oxygen is called (a) deoxygenated (b) oxygenated (c) waste blood (d) empty blood
  3. The tiny vessels for exchange of gases are (a) Arteries (b) Veins (c) Capillaries (d) Bones
  4. Circulation of blood means (a) storage of blood (b) movement of blood (c) colour of blood (d) temperature of blood
