TOPIC: Respiratory System
SUBTOPIC: Organs and Functions
CLASS: Primary 6
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Pupils should be able to:
- Define the respiratory system.
- Identify major organs of the respiratory system.
- State the functions of each organ.
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS
- Respiration
- Lungs
- Trachea
- Nose
- Oxygen
- Carbon dioxide
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
- Chart of respiratory system
- Simple model of lungs (plastic bag demonstration)
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
Teacher asks pupils to take a deep breath and exhale. Teacher explains: “This is respiration — your body taking in oxygen and giving out carbon dioxide.”
CONTENT OF LESSON
Meaning of the Respiratory System
The respiratory system is the part of the body that helps us breathe.
- It allows us to take in oxygen (which we need to stay alive)
- And breathe out carbon dioxide (a waste gas)
Breathing is also called respiration.
Organs of the Respiratory System
Here are the main parts of the respiratory system and what they do:
- Nose – takes in air and filters dust and germs
- Mouth – also lets air in, especially during fast breathing
- Trachea (windpipe) – a tube that carries air to the lungs
- Lungs – the main breathing organs where oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is removed
- Diaphragm – a muscle under the lungs that moves up and down to help us breathe
Functions of the Respiratory System
- Brings oxygen into the body for energy
- Removes carbon dioxide, a waste gas from the body
- Helps us speak, because air passes through the voice box
Fun Fact:
You take about 20,000 breaths every single day, even when you’re sleeping!
