TOPIC: The Circulatory System
SUBTOPIC: Functions of the Heart
CLASS: Primary 6
DATE: ____________________
PERIOD: ____________________
DURATION: 40 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of the circulatory system.
  2. Identify the parts of the human heart.
  3. State the main functions of the circulatory system.
  4. Draw and label the human heart.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS

  • Circulatory system
  • Heart
  • Blood
  • Veins
  • Arteries
  • Capillaries

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Chart of human circulatory system
  • Model of the heart (if available)
  • Diagrams on the board

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

Teacher asks pupils to place their right hand on the left side of their chest and feel the heartbeat. Teacher explains: “This is your heart beating — it helps pump blood all over your body.”

CONTENT OF LESSON

Meaning of the Circulatory System

The circulatory system is the body’s transport system.
It moves blood, oxygen, and nutrients to every part of the body.

It is made up of:

  • The heart
  • The blood
  • The blood vessels (like arteries, veins, and capillaries)

The Heart

The heart is a strong, muscular organ about the size of your fist.
Its main job is to pump blood through the body.

The heart has four parts, called chambers:

  1. Right atrium
  2. Left atrium
  3. Right ventricle
  4. Left ventricle

The atriums receive blood, and the ventricles pump it out!

Functions of the Circulatory System

  1. Pumps blood all around the body
  2. Sends oxygen and nutrients to the cells
  3. Removes waste like carbon dioxide from the body
  4. Protects the body by carrying white blood cells to fight germs and infection
