The Abia State Government has decided to ban graduation parties for nursery and lower primary classes to help lighten the financial load on parents and improve accountability in schools.
This decision was announced after a recent Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia. Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, shared with the press that graduation ceremonies will now only take place for students in terminal classes, specifically Primary 6 and SS3, in both public and private schools.
Goodluck Ubochi, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, pointed out that having graduation parties for younger students has become overly costly and often unnecessary. He explained that these events put pressure on parents to spend money on celebrations that don’t really signify any major educational achievements.
Ubochi stressed that graduation ceremonies should be focused on genuine transitions, like finishing primary or secondary school, instead of promoting students to the next grade.
This new policy is important for several reasons. It will help families save money and reduce stress about school-related expenses. Schools, on the other hand, will need to ensure that they focus on delivering quality education and managing their finances responsibly. For students, this change means that celebrations will now be centered around significant educational milestones, making them more special.
Moving forward, schools should update their event calendars to reflect these changes, inform parents in advance to avoid any confusion, and allocate more resources towards enhancing teaching and learning materials. The Abia State Government believes these efforts are crucial for improving the education system and ensuring that spending aligns with meaningful learning outcomes.
