FG Introduces Learner Identification Number (LIN) for Nigerian Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new policy known as the Learner Identification Number (LIN), aimed at improving the tracking and management of students across the country.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, explained that the initiative will assign a unique number to every student, starting from primary school and continuing throughout their academic journey.

What is the Learner Identification Number (LIN)?

The LIN is a permanent identification number that will follow each learner from primary school through secondary school. This means that even if a student changes schools, their academic records and progress can still be tracked easily.

Why the LIN Matters

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria currently faces a major challenge in student transition. Millions of pupils enroll in primary school, but only a fraction continue to junior secondary education.

With the LIN system, the government will be able to:

  • Track student enrollment and attendance
  • Monitor academic progress over time
  • Identify students who drop out of school
  • Improve education planning and data accuracy

This move is expected to help reduce the number of out-of-school children and ensure better accountability within the education sector.

Possible Changes to Entrance Exams

As part of the reform, the government is also considering phasing out the National Common Entrance Examination, replacing it with a system that evaluates students based on continuous academic performance.

While the policy has been welcomed by some education stakeholders, others have raised concerns about its implementation. Key issues include:

  • Lack of digital infrastructure in rural areas
  • Data management and security
  • Proper training for school administrators

Experts believe that the success of the LIN initiative will depend heavily on how well it is implemented across all states.

The introduction of the Learner Identification Number marks a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s education system. If properly executed, it could improve transparency, reduce dropout rates, and ensure that every child’s educational journey is properly documented.
