By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Count a group of objects from 1 to 5 without skipping or repeating any
  • Recognize and say the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on sight
  • Write the numbers 1 to 5 neatly
  • Match a number to the correct number of objects
  • Arrange the numbers 1 to 5 from the smallest to the largest

Counting: How Many Are There?

Counting is how we find out “how many” of something we have. Every time we count, we touch or point to one object and say one number — never two numbers for the same object, and never two objects for the same number. This is called one-to-one counting, and it’s the single most important habit to build at this stage.

Start with the pupil’s own fingers — they’re always available and always the right number. Hold up one finger at a time: “One… two… three… four… five.” Once that feels natural, move to objects around the classroom: doors, windows, chairs, books — anything countable in fives or fewer.

A short counting rhyme helps the numbers stick: “One, two, three, four, five — once I caught a fish alive!” Rhythm and repetition do a lot of the memorization work here, more than drilling numerals alone.

Learning to Recognize Each Number

Numerals are shapes, just like letters — and just like letters, they’re easier to remember with a picture attached to them:

  • 1 — a straight stick, standing tall and alone
  • 2 — a duck sitting down, with its neck curved forward
  • 3 — two little bumps, like an open ear
  • 4 — a flag on a pole, or a chair tipped on its side
  • 5 — a hat sitting on top of a round tummy

Let pupils describe what each number “looks like” in their own words before you give them the standard picture — their own association often sticks better than yours.

Writing the Numbers Correctly

Good number formation now prevents reversed or illegible digits later. Always start at the top and move down:

  • 1: one straight line, top to bottom
  • 2: curve from the top down to the left, then a straight line right
  • 3: two curves to the right, stacked
  • 4: a line down, a dash right, then a line straight through the middle
  • 5: a short dash on top, a curve down and around, then a flat line at the base

Before pencil ever touches paper, have pupils “write” each number in the air with a big arm movement, then trace it on a partner’s back, and only then write it down. The bigger motion first makes the small motor skill of handwriting easier to pick up.

Matching Numbers to Real Things

A number only means something once a child can connect it to a real quantity. Point out numbers already hiding in daily life:

  • 1 nose on your face
  • 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 hands
  • 3 wheels on a tricycle
  • 4 legs on a chair or a table
  • 5 fingers on one hand

A simple matching activity works well here: draw a group of objects (say, four stars) and have the pupil draw a line to the correct numeral.

Putting the Numbers in Order

Think of the numbers 1 to 5 as steps on a small ladder — 1 is the first, lowest step, and 5 is the highest. Smallest means the least amount; largest means the most.

The correct order, smallest to largest, is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Evaluation

  1. Count how many fingers are on your right hand.
  2. Write the number 2.
  3. Draw 3 balls in your book.
  4. Which number comes immediately after 4?
  5. Arrange these numbers from the smallest to the biggest: 3, 1, 5, 2, 4.

Assignment

  1. Write the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 three times each in your exercise book.
  2. Draw 4 cups and write the number “4” next to them.
  3. Count the chairs in your dining room at home — count up to 5 only.
