Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to identify and state reasons why we must not waste water.

Introduction

Water is one of the necessities of life. Animals, plants, and human beings cannot do without water. Water serves many purposes in our lives, so it must be saved and not wasted.

There are times when water is in abundance (rainy season) and times when water is in short supply (dry season). This is why it is very important to use water wisely at all times.

Why We Must Not Waste Water

  1. We need water for drinking — without water, we cannot survive.
  2. We need water for cooking our food.
  3. We need water for planting crops — farmers need water to grow food.
  4. We need water for rearing animals — animals need water to stay alive.
  5. We need water for cleaning ourselves — bathing and brushing teeth.
  6. We need water for washing our clothes and household items.
  7. Water can be very expensive in some communities, especially during dry season.

Ways to Conserve (Save) Water

  1. Turn off taps when not in use.
  2. Fix leaking pipes and taps quickly.
  3. Use only the amount of water you need.
  4. Collect and reuse rainwater where possible.
  5. Do not leave water running while brushing teeth or washing dishes.

Lesson Evaluation

  1. Identify and state 5 reasons why we must not waste water.
  2. What happens when there is no water in a community?
  3. Mention 3 ways we can save water at home.
