Length — Meaning, Measuring Instruments and Counting 211–220 | Primary 1 Mathematics 3rd Term Week 6

Subject: Mathematics (Numeracy) | Class: Primary 1 | Term: 3rd Term | Week: 6

Previous Lesson: Money — Addition and Subtraction — Week 5

Learning Objectives

  1. Count and identify numbers from 211–220.
  2. Count forward and backward, and skip count.
  3. Explain the meaning of length.
  4. Compare lengths — long, longer, longest; short, shorter, shortest.

Lesson 1 — Counting 211–220 and Skip Counts

Class Exercise

  1. Count in 2s starting from 211 to 230.
  2. Count in 3s starting from 217 to 238.
  3. Count in 5s starting from 216 to 251.
  4. Count in 10s starting from 221 to 301.

Lesson 2 — Meaning of Length

Length is the distance between two points. Every object in the classroom has a different length. The classroom is longer than the chalkboard; the chalkboard is longer than the desk; the desk is longer than a notebook.

Length is distance in the horizontal direction. Height is distance in the vertical direction.

Lesson 3 — Measuring Instruments

Instrument Use
Ruler Used for measuring and ruling lines.
Measuring Tape Used for measuring the size of a person when sewing clothes or measuring curved shapes.
Tape Measure Used in building construction. Very long, retracts into a holder.
Metre Stick Used in the classroom for Mathematics and ruling lines on the board.
Trundle Wheel Used to measure rough distances, e.g. marking sports fields.
Foot Rule Used for measuring the size of a foot.

The SI unit of length is the metre (m). Other units include millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), and kilometre (km).

100 cm = 1 m

Lesson Evaluation

  1. What is length?
  2. List any four instruments used to measure distance.
  3. The SI unit of length is ___. (a) metre (b) yard (c) second
