NUC Approves 13 New Degree Programmes for Nigerian Universities Under CCMAS Framework

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the approval of 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities as part of its ongoing effort to align higher education with global trends and national development needs.

The approval comes under the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) initiative — a framework designed to modernize university curricula, promote innovation, and ensure Nigerian graduates remain competitive in the 21st-century knowledge economy.

List of Newly Approved Degree Programmes

The 13 approved degree programmes include both emerging technology fields and specialized disciplines in health, security, education, and engineering. They are:

  1. B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence

  2. B.Ed. Christian Education

  3. B.Sc. Human Kinetics (Sport Management)

  4. B.Eng. Geomatics

  5. B.HLIS Community Health Science

  6. B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies

  7. B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance

  8. B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology

  9. B.Sc. Telecommunication Science

  10. B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

  11. B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management

  12. B.Sc. Nuclear Science

  13. B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering

Driving Innovation Through Modern Curriculum

According to the NUC, the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear Science, and Telecommunication Science reflects the government’s commitment to preparing Nigerian graduates for emerging industries powered by technology, data, and innovation.

The CCMAS framework, which replaced the older BMAS (Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards), allows universities greater academic freedom — enabling them to design 30% of their curriculum content to address local needs, while maintaining a 70% national standard.

Implications for Nigerian Universities and Students

This approval means that universities across Nigeria can now begin the process of mounting these programmes, once they have the required resources, faculty, and facilities approved by the NUC.

Students seeking admission in 2026 and beyond can look forward to applying for these newly recognized courses, which open doors to diverse career opportunities in artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, community health, and digital security.

Aligning with Global Educational Trends

With the inclusion of fields like AI, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Islamic Economics and Finance, Nigeria joins other nations expanding their higher education curricula to reflect the fourth industrial revolution and evolving societal needs.

Experts believe this move will enhance interdisciplinary research, promote skills-based learning, and improve graduate employability across sectors.

The NUC’s approval of 13 new degree programmes marks a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s tertiary education system. It signals a future where university education is more practical, industry-driven, and globally relevant.

As universities begin implementation, stakeholders hope these reforms will contribute to national development, innovation, and the global competitiveness of Nigerian graduates.
